We are on the look-out for a highly creative, self-motivated, results-oriented, web-savvy individual to join our growing team for a 12-month temporary position (with the possibility of extension).
The previous version of our website got a lot of really great response from around the web. Over the past two years it has been featured on a multitude of web design galleries and even listed on a few “best of” lists. It’s been great, but things on the web change really quickly and we want to follow our own advice by freshening things up before they get too dated.
2009 was an exciting year of growth for Lift – staffing, space, clientele and revenue. We experienced so much forward movement, in fact, that it landed us a spot on Alberta Venture’s 2010 Fast Growth 50 list. Needless to say, we’re honoured and thrilled to be among such glowing company – all innnovative, enterprising businesses, determined to not only keep themselves afloat during last year’s downturn, but actually emerge ...
I recently stumbled across a fractal generator and thought I’d share the results here. I’d used them before but this one was a little simpler to use. It called Fractal4D and it’s an Adobe Air application so you need to have air installed to run it. Cyberra asked us to design a banner stand with the tagline “Cyberinfrastructure: The invisible infrastructure making things work” I thought a ...
“From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty.”
As cliché as it may sound, we really do feel privileged to have such a diverse range of clients to work for and we find that one of the more exciting parts of our business is the opportunity to really get to know them, their work and just what it is that makes them tick. Developing a clear understanding of ...
The landscape of the Internet (webscape?) is constantly changing. Building a community around a brand used to mean setting up a discussion forum on your website and letting people comment on a corporate blog. Now, that seems like a pretty low bar. With social media sites taking over, sites like Facebook, Twitter and aspects of Google, there are conversations happening in many more places. If you’ve got a product ...
Business at Lift has been good lately. We’ve been diversifying our client base and taking on all sorts of new and interesting projects. (We really should update our portfolio sometime soon.)
However, by putting our heads down to get a bunch of projects done, we may be letting other (and perhaps better) opportunities slip past us. It’s not that we aren’t trying to make good choices but ...
Especially for those of us who live in the North, summer goes by in a flash. So, what have we been up to for the past couple of Months? (Obviously not writing blog articles.)
It’s been a busy summer at lift as we’ve completed a number of projects and started a few more. Some of the notable upcoming works include:
AppBoy
AppBoy is a social community for mobile ...
The same as nearly any other website, non-profit organizations (or associations) need to worry about all the regular design elements. If you belong to one of these organizations, you’ll need to worry about the site being easy to use, friendly, having the right message, appropriate colors and fonts, and all the other stuff. In addition to all this, you also have to worry about a few other things that ...
Hi everyone, I’m the newest member here at lift.
Now to tell you a little bit about myself, I’ve been designing and building websites professionally for a little over 2 years. I’m all about growth and perfecting the sites I build and I believe lift is the best place to work. I look forward to taking on the many projects and challenges here at lift and hope ...
We’ve built probably the best project management board ever. Well, maybe not the very best but we’re pretty proud. It utilizes the magical properties of static cling vinyl and as each project progresses we move it along the time line of Discovery to Design to Production. Look out projects, get ready to be managed!
“the coffee’s over there… it’s self serve”

Trying something new isn’t always as simple as it should be. This morning, I had a few minutes to kill so I stopped in at a new (to me) coffee shop to grab a cup to go. It’s a fairly well known establishment in town, but I had only been there once before. Not thinking that it should ...
Here are a few ideas that might get you started.
- Get a handle on your expenses. Often when times are busy, businesses take on extra expenses and when things slow down it might be time to get out the spreadsheet and figure out what can be trimmed.
- Get better at your ‘trade’. Whatever it is you do, when it gets a bit slower, take some time to read more online ...

101 is an ongoing effort to answer commonly asked questions related to the web design.
One of the most common comments we get in the design process involves screen resolution. Although most computer users understand that there are different screen sizes, many still don’t realize that there are various screen resolutions that can be set by preference.
Put simply, the resolution of a screen is the number of pixels ...
There are “trouble spots” in all projects. These are the parts of the project that aren’t fully thought out, lack documentation or in general are just vague. In the programming world, they are also the parts of the project that you or your team doesn’t have experience developing or that the solution is unknown. I can’t tell you the number of projects I’ve been in where ...
“Don’t copy your competitors… you end up with their bad ideas.”
When we start a project, we usually do some kind of competitive analysis to get our bearings on the client’s place in the market. The idea with this exercise is not to come up with a list of elements to copy, but to understand the world in where our client does business. Sometimes in conjunction with this ...
I’m in the Denver airport right now en route to Austin for SXSW. lift was lucky enough to be asked to be a part of Digital Alberta’s delegation that is providing an Alberta presence at the interactive conference.
I’ll be spending the next four days taking in workshops, mingling and talking about lift and Parade.
We’ve never really thought of ourselves as minimal designers, but we were happy to find that our own site was mentioned in a list of inspirational minimal designs on a recent post on Web Designer Wall. The article features some of our favorite designs in recent history, so we’re pretty pumped to be included.
lift will be featured in Volume One of The Creative Unity a publication whose mission is “to feature only the best designs, designers, and design studios in order to create a book that shows off supreme talent while creating an inspirational tool for designers from around the world”.
We’re really excited to have been selected for this first edition of The Creative Unity. When I first heard about the ...
I’m happy to have joined the fine folks here at Lift. It’s still very new and exciting.
So, a little bit about myself. I’ve been building websites professionally for about 9 years now so I’m not exactly the new kid on the block.
“Why should you regularly login to your CMS? Keeping the content on your site current and fresh adds credibility to your organization and minimizes frustration for the visitors…”
Lift develops the majority of our websites with our own custom-built content management system. We’re big believers in CMS-powered sites and strongly encourage our clients to use their CMS for all its worth. It’s big on convenience, portability and ...

We are very excited to announce the re-launch of Parade, a product we’ve painstakingly developed for photographers and creative professionals that allows them to instantly get their portfolios online and easily manage their websites, anytime anywhere…so they can spend their time doing what they do best.
How did Parade come about, you ask? Some ...
To cap off a year full of encouraging response to our work, we were ecstatic to find that our site was included as one of the Best sites of 2008 by “Abduzeedo.com”. This came as quite a surprise, but we couldn’t be more pleased to have been included with so many other inspirational designs.
Take the time to check out the article at http://abduzeedo.com/2008-the-best-sites-year

Thanks to everyone who came out to our office warming last week. It was a big success in our books as a myriad of people streamed in throughout the evening. We had a great mix of people that included past and current clients, friends, and even a few people we had only met online (mainly from twitter).
For those of you who were here, below is a reminder of the ...
